Car Insurance Premiums Set to Increase: 4 Major Insurers in Japan to Hike Prices from 2024

Tokyo, Japan – In a sudden move, four of Japan’s largest automobile insurance companies have announced plans to raise premiums for their customers starting next year. The decision, which takes effect on January 1st, 2024, is expected to impact millions of drivers across the country.

According to industry sources, the four major insurance companies – Tokio Marine & Fire Insurance, MS&AD Insurance Group, Sompo Japan Insurance Inc., and Nippon Life Insurance Co. – will increase their premiums by an average of 10% to 15% across the board.

The reasons behind the price hike are attributed to a combination of factors, including:

  • Rising costs of medical treatment and repairs
  • Increase in the number of accidents and related claims
  • Higher labor and maintenance costs for vehicles
  • Inflation and economic uncertainty

These developments are expected to have far-reaching consequences for Japanese drivers, with many likely to feel the pinch in their monthly insurance premiums. With the average insurance premium currently standing at around ¥30,000 to ¥40,000 (approximately $275-$370 USD) per year, the upcoming hike could lead to an increase of ¥3,000 to ¥6,000 (approximately $275-$550 USD) or more per annum.

Industry experts have warned that this could lead to a decrease in demand for insurance policies, potentially disrupting the market. "This increase in premiums could have a significant impact on the insurance industry as a whole," said one analyst. "Consumers are likely to seek out cheaper options or opt for bare-bone policies, which could lead to a drop in revenue for insurance companies."

As news of the premium hike spreads, it remains to be seen how the automotive industry and consumers will respond. For now, it seems that Japanese drivers are in for a bumpy ride ahead.
