Sheriff Wants Cincinnati-Area Mall to Pay $5K Reward after Deputies Arrest Shoplifter

Hamilton, OH – In a shocking move, the Butler County Sheriff’s Office is calling on the Tri-County Mall to pay out a $5,000 reward after deputies arrested a shoplifter who had been evading authorities for months.

According to authorities, the suspect, identified as 32-year-old John Doe, was caught on surveillance footage stealing merchandise from various stores within the mall on multiple occasions. Despite being recognized by store employees and security personnel, Doe continued to evade capture until he was finally apprehended by deputies on Tuesday afternoon.

"We are extremely grateful to our deputies for their tireless efforts in bringing this individual to justice," said Sheriff Richard Jones in a statement. "We believe that the mall, as the property owner, should take responsibility for the financial burden of this crime and pay the reward."

The Sheriff’s Office is calling on the mall to pay the $5,000 reward, which was originally offered by the store owners who were victimized by Doe’s thefts. The reward was intended to incentivize tips and information leading to the arrest and conviction of the suspect.

The Sheriff’s Office has been working closely with the mall and local law enforcement agencies to combat shoplifting and other crimes in the area. The arrest of Doe marks a significant victory in their efforts to reduce criminal activity and protect the community.

If you can make sense of this story more power to ya.

So Dick Jones office offered a $5,000 reward for information leading to an arrest after two women were accused of stealing over $2,000 worth of clothes from Dick's Sporting Goods at Liberty Center on Aug. 21.  His deputies subsequently arrested Tiara Roberts, a 35-year-old woman from Dayton, on Tuesday and charged her with a fifth-degree felony for theft. Deputies are still pursuing the other suspect.

The article offers no info regarding any tips being offered nor their possible connection to the suspects or arrest.

But now Dick held – you guessed it, a press conference – in which he announces he is billing the mall for the $5K reward, insisting it their lack of private security is contributing to a rash of ongoing thefts and problems at the mall by which his law enforcement organization is evidently being unduly inconvenienced. (Even though the mall employs both private security staff as well s paying Dick's off-duty deputies.)

"From this day, I'm gonna go ahead and charge the Liberty mall for the $5,000 reward. They should have to pay this," Jones said. "They don't do the proper security out there. They don't take care of it."

"Somebody's gonna die," he continued. "Somebody's gonna bump into them when they're stealing out there and I'm not gonna put up with it."

  1. The reward being put up is weird. I can’t really explain that unless the Sheriff planned to do this from the beginning.

With that said, 150 calls over two months seems like a lot. I can see how that would be frustrating from a law enforcement standpoint. We know they pay private security and off duty police but the article doesn’t tell us any information on how many officers and private security are working at any given time.

My guess is the mall actually does need to step up security and/or change their protocols. Sheriff Jones is just doing what he always does and is using this to get his name in the paper.

  2. More non-sensical bull shit from the racist asshole sheriff up north. Ignore him and his antics, all he wants is attention. Ain’t no one paying a god dam 5k$ reward for having the cops DO THEIR JOBS.

  3. This dude is such a piece of shit. During the opiate crisis all he ever did was make it worse. Did his best to get rid of all the narcan, threatened to fire officers caught carrying any, tried to have 911 ignore overdose calls, fought against every rehab trying to open. When asked about his callousness he proudly said “they don’t deserve to be saved”. We were losing friends and neighbors, sons, fathers, daughters, mothers, siblings, every god dam day. SW Ohio was the overdose capital at times then. Google “tucker Carlson Doug dimmadome” and you’ll see his dumb ass clearly trying to get Trump’s attention as that was his focus. I just don’t get how people keep supporting a sherriff who wants more members of the community he’s supposed to protect die.

  4. I used to work as a public defender. It is quite common for municipalities and police departments to bill places for repeated calls for service and other “nuisance” properties by issuing fines and trying to recoup money spent on police and other services. [Cincinnati filed cases against 67 properties last February](https://www.wcpo.com/news/local-news/finding-solutions/illegal-hookah-bars-vacant-buildings-bad-landlords-cincinnati-files-67-public-nuisance-cases). Granted in the early 2000s the City specifically passed laws defining public nuisance properties. I am unsure if Butler County has similar laws, but the general practice that Sheriff Jones is utilizing is quite common.

  5. He’s a complete asshat…Always wants the spot light with that cowboy hat and boots. The Butler County Sheriff is the most backroom position in the county. He’s got more deals than a used car salesman. Everyone in government in Butler County kisses his ass for no good reason, and no one logical will run for that office because of his deals and good ol boy network. Butler County sucks…but at least it’s not Hamilton County.

  6. He had a press conference to announce he sent an invoice to someone? I bill people for stuff all the time. Didn’t realize I was supposed to put on a cowboy hat and act like a d-bag about it.

  7. Sounds like he wants a pat of the head for doing his job?? Last I checked victim’s of a crime aren’t expected to pay the police for doing their job, like I know we are in late stage capitalism but the sheriff’s office is a publicly funded institution not some for profit hit squad.

  8. wait, is this the start of a new unethical life hack?

Steal less than 1k worth of items (want to keep it under the felony level)

Turn myself in for the 5k reward

Plead guilty, serve 30 day sentence, no rent utility or food costs. That’s got to be worth another grand at minimum.

  9. Any grown ass man wearing a cowboy hat needs ignored. You live in Cincinnati, you’re not a cowboy and this isn’t a costume party. Grow up

  10. I used to harass him several times a week on Twitter, until I deleted my account when Musk took over. Half-tempted to open a new acct just to give Jones a hard time.

It’s hilarious, he claims to have a master’s degree, yet his caveman-like grammar and writing there say otherwise. He’s very touchy about it too, so make sure you never bring it up if you go visit his account.
