Breaking News: Sri Lanka’s Road to Recovery, Sovereignty and Global Repositioning
In an exclusive interview with DW News, Sri Lanka’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ali Sabry, shares his insights on the country’s path to recovery, its quest for sovereignty, and its efforts to reposition itself on the global stage.
Recovery from the Economic Crisis
Sri Lanka has been grappling with an unprecedented economic crisis, which has left the country facing severe food and fuel shortages, and a struggling economy. When asked about the progress made in addressing these issues, Minister Sabry acknowledged the challenges but emphasized the government’s efforts to stabilize the economy.
"We are making progress, albeit slowly," he said. "We have implemented policies to reduce the budget deficit, improved the management of foreign exchange, and increased the availability of essential goods such as food and fuel. We are also working to address the issue of foreign debt and restructure our debt obligations."
Sovereignty in the Face of External Pressure
The International Monetary Fund (IMF) and other international lenders have imposed harsh conditions on Sri Lanka to access further financial assistance. When asked about the balancing act between accepting international assistance and protecting Sri Lanka’s sovereignty, Minister Sabry emphasized the government’s commitment to its independence.
"We are not beholden to any one country or organization," he said. "We will work with the IMF and other partners, but we will not compromise our sovereignty or our values. We are a independent nation, and we will make decisions in the best interests of our people."
Global Repositioning
As Sri Lanka navigates its economic and financial challenges, the country is also looking to reposition itself on the global stage. Minister Sabry highlighted the importance of the country’s strategic location in the Indian Ocean and its potential as a hub for international trade and investment.
"Sri Lanka is located at the crossroads of international trade, and we are committed to utilizing our strategic location to facilitate trade and commerce," he said. "We are also working to promote tourism, agriculture, and other sectors to drive economic growth and development."
