Learned helplessness is one of the most damaging cognitive biases we can experience. This phenomenon was first discovered through a rather harsh experiment on animals conducted by American psychologist Martin Seligman in 1967. In this study, dogs were conditioned to associate a sound with an electric shock. Seligman expected that when the cage was opened, the dogs would flee at the sound, anticipating the shock. However, the outcome was surprising: the dogs, having resigned themselves to their fate, simply lay down and whimpered, awaiting the shock. When the cage was closed, they tried to escape and failed, but when it was opened, they no longer even tried.
Unfortunately, learned helplessness is a trait found in humans as well. After trying and failing several times, we often give up, concluding that we are incapable of succeeding. This learned helplessness is frequently instilled in people during childhood by parents or teachers, leading them to grow up with a sense of defeat in certain areas of life. It’s akin to the joke about the man who persistently prayed to God to let him win the lottery, until God finally shouted from the heavens: "At least buy a ticket!"
But there’s good news. Unlike other animals, humans have incredibly adaptable brains, which allow us to change at almost any age and succeed even in areas where we once thought it impossible.
