All Grenfell deaths were avoidable, says inquiry chair

A devastating conclusion has been reached by the chair of the Grenfell Tower inquiry, which has found that all 72 deaths that occurred during the 2017 fire at the London tower block were avoidable.

In a highly critical report, Sir Martin Moore-Bick has identified a series of failures and negligence by the authorities, the building’s owners, and the government that led to the tragedy.

The report, which has been highly anticipated, has found that the fire was caused by a faulty fridge-freezer in a fourth-floor flat, but that the blaze was exacerbated by a lack of working sprinklers, inadequate fire doors, and a general lack of attention to fire safety by the authorities.

Sir Martin has also criticized the government’s response to the disaster, saying that it was "inadequate" and that ministers failed to take adequate action to prevent similar tragedies in the future.

The report has been welcomed by the families of those who lost their lives in the fire, who have been campaigning for justice and accountability for years.
