PRO-PALESTINE PROTESTER CHAINS HERSELF TO CAR IN DOCKLANDS, BLOCKING MELBOURNE TRAFFIC
A dramatic protest has unfolded in Melbourne’s Docklands, with a pro-Palestine activist chaining herself to a car, bringing traffic to a standstill.
The incident occurred at around 10am this morning, with police and emergency services rushing to the scene to try and free the woman.
The protester, who has not been named, is understood to be a member of the Palestinian community in Melbourne. She is believed to be part of a group of activists who have been holding a peaceful protest in the area, calling for an end to Israeli occupation of Palestinian territories.
Eyewitnesses described the scene as "chaotic" and "intense", with traffic gridlocked in all directions. "It was like nothing I’ve ever seen before," said one bystander. "The police were trying to negotiate with her, but she refused to budge. She’s really passionate about the cause."
The protest is believed to be in response to recent violence in the Gaza Strip, where Palestinian militants have been launching rockets into Israel and Israeli forces have been responding with airstrikes.
