Karnataka Considers Introducing 6 Days of Paid Period Leave per Year for Public and Private Sectors
Bengaluru, March 10, 2023: In a move aimed at promoting menstrual hygiene and reducing gender-based stigma, the Karnataka government is mulling introducing six days of paid period leave per year for both public and private sector employees.
The proposal, which is expected to be implemented soon, will ensure that women employees are provided with a secure and confidential leave policy to manage their menstrual health. The move is seen as a significant step towards empowering women and creating a more inclusive work environment.
Under the proposed policy, employees will be allowed to take up to six days of paid leave per year for menstruation-related reasons, including period pains, fatigue, and cramps. The leave can be availed in installments, allowing employees to take one or two days off as needed.
"This is a welcome move towards creating a more equitable work environment," said a spokesperson for the Karnataka Government. "We believe that menstrual health is a critical aspect of overall well-being, and we are committed to providing a supportive environment for our employees."
The move is seen as a major step forward in reducing the stigma associated with menstruation, which is still prevalent in many parts of the country. By providing a safe and confidential leave policy, the government hopes to encourage women to take charge of their menstrual health without fear of judgment or retribution.
The proposal is expected to benefit thousands of women employees in the state, who currently have to manage their menstrual health while juggling work and other responsibilities. The move is also expected to improve workplace productivity and reduce absenteeism.
