BREAKING NEWS
MBTA Red Line Service Suspended on Ashmont Branch this Saturday
Get ready for a potentially chaotic morning commute this Saturday as the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) announces a suspension of Red Line service on the Ashmont Branch. The reason? To remove a slow zone between Savin Hill and Fields Corner, and conduct critical tunnel inspections.
Starting from 7:00 AM on Saturday, the Red Line trains will not run between JFK/UMass and Ashmont, causing disruptions to commuters’ usual routes. This major maintenance work is aimed at ensuring the safe and efficient operation of the subway system.
Affected Routes:
- Red Line (JFK/UMass to Ashmont)
Impacted Stations:
- JFK/UMass
- Savin Hill
- Fields Corner
- Ashmont
Service Disruptions:
- No Red Line trains will run between JFK/UMass and Ashmont from 7:00 AM to 11:00 AM on Saturday
- Bus shuttle service will be available as an alternative
- Expect significant delays and crowding on bus routes and other nearby train lines
Work Schedule:
- Removal of slow zone: 7:00 AM – 9:00 AM
- Tunnel inspections: 9:00 AM – 11:00 AM
What to Expect:
- Heavy delays and congestion on roads and highways
- Crowding on bus routes and other nearby train lines
- Possible cancellations or significant delays on nearby commuter rail lines

- Consider alternative routes or modes of transportation
- Stay informed through the MBTA website, social media, and text alerts
MBTA Apology:
The MBTA apologizes for the inconvenience this may cause and encourages passengers to plan ahead to minimize disruptions.
Why the Work is Necessary:
Removing the slow zone and conducting tunnel inspections is crucial to maintaining the integrity and safety of the Red Line infrastructure. This work will help prevent potential failures, reduce the risk of accidents, and ensure reliable service for passengers.

This means that on Saturday, Red Line service will be suspended between JFK/UMass, Ashmont, and Braintree on Saturday. Ashmont branch service will resume on Sunday with the Braintree Branch remaining closed until Monday morning due to the current track work happening.
Shuttle buses will begin at JFK/UMass and will serve all stops to Ashmont and Braintree on 2 separate shuttle routes. Commuter Rail will still be free between South Station and Braintree. The Fairmount Commuter Rail line is a good alternative for service to Dorchester and Mattapan on Saturday.
The expansion of this service suspension to include the Ashmont Branch allows work crews to take advantage of construction equipment in the area and perform critical track work to remove a speed restriction on the Ashmont Branch. The MBTA will also maximize this service outage by performing additional work, including proactive overhead tunnel inspections within the Ashmont Branch’s tunnel areas, seeking out any possible water infiltration or structural repair needs with crews on standby to make repairs as needed. Tunnel inspections were performed prior to resuming service after last weekend’s water main break, and we are maximizing this outage to perform another round of inspections.
Understanding how challenging any service interruption is for riders, the MBTA apologizes for the need to expand this service suspension and continues to express its appreciation of riders’ patience as this important Red Line work is completed.

This is a pretty good use of space and time. Disappointing that there’s an additional closure, but proactive shutdowns is how we avoid monthlong closures of the Braintree branch in the future.
