Former BC Conservative candidate hosts Kelowna fundraiser for Freedom Convoy leader

A former BC Conservative candidate has hosted a fundraiser in Kelowna for the leader of the Freedom Convoy, sparking controversy and raising questions about the connection between political candidates and extreme right-wing groups.

According to sources, Chris Montgomery, a former BC Conservative candidate who ran in the 2019 provincial election, hosted a fundraiser for Tamara Lich, the leader of the Freedom Convoy, at a Kelowna venue on February 19th.

The Freedom Convoy, which has been holding protests across Canada in support of anti-vaccine mandate truckers, has been linked to far-right extremism and anti-Semitic ideologies.

Montgomery, who lost his bid for the BC Conservative nomination in Kelowna-Mission, has been accused of spreading misinformation and conspiracy theories on social media.

When asked about the fundraiser, Montgomery claimed it was a "private event" and denied any affiliation with the Freedom Convoy or its ideologies.

"This was a private gathering of friends and supporters, and I had no knowledge of the political affiliations or beliefs of the attendees," Montgomery said in a statement.

However, eyewitnesses at the event described it as a "Freedom Convoy fundraiser" and reported seeing attendees wearing Freedom Convoy hats and stickers.

The incident has raised concerns about the connection between political candidates and extreme right-wing groups in Canada.

"Chris Montgomery’s decision to host a fundraiser for Tamara Lich is unacceptable and sends a dangerous message," said Dr. Janna Prom-Manley, a professor of political science at the University of British Columbia. "It’s a clear indication that he is willing to associate himself with extremist ideologies and perpetuate harmful rhetoric."

The event has also sparked concerns about the influence of extreme right-wing groups on Canadian politics.

"As a country, we need to take a stand against hate and intolerance," said BC Premier David Eby. "I condemn any attempts to legitimize or support extreme right-wing groups, and I urge all political candidates to reject any affiliation with such ideologies."
