In a shocking turn of events, Tesla, the pioneer of electric vehicles, has been dethroned from its top spot in the safety rating by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). For the first time in the history of the IIHS Top Safety Pick+ Awards, Honda has taken the top spot, leaving Tesla in its wake.
The IIHS, a renowned non-profit organization dedicated to reducing road crashes, crash injuries, and fatalities, has been conducting rigorous tests on vehicles since 1959. The Top Safety Pick+ Awards are the highest honors bestowed upon vehicles that meet the most demanding safety standards.
According to the IIHS, Honda’s top-rated vehicles, including the Accord, CR-V, and Pilot, have earned perfect scores in all six IIHS crashworthiness tests, including the challenging small overlap front test. This achievement makes Honda the first automaker to earn a perfect 2023 Top Safety Pick+ rating for multiple vehicles.
Meanwhile, Tesla, which has long been the benchmark for electric vehicles and autonomous driving technology, failed to meet the IIHS’s standards. The electric car giant’s vehicles, including the Model 3 and Model Y, fell short in the small overlap front test, earning only a ‘Marginal’ rating.
The IIHS’s Director, David Zuby, emphasized the importance of prioritizing safety in the automotive industry: "Safety is a top concern for all of us. We applaud Honda for its commitment to building safer vehicles and earning this prestigious recognition."
The news has sent shockwaves through the automotive industry, with many speculating that Tesla’s lack of perfection in safety testing may impact its reputation and sales.

A few years ago Teslas in general did very good in crash tests, and at one point hadde the safest car in the world.
Well the updated (and more realistic and strict) dethrones Teslas and they are nowhere to be seen among the safest cars you can buy!

Nope- testing wasn’t done for Tesla with EuroNCAP since 2022. Same with Lucid, and a bunch of other brands. Good try, though.
Tesla doesn’t just test against the standard tests but they look at actual accident data to make their cars safer. They constantly iterate to make their cars safer. I want everyone in my family in a Tesla.
If Tesla is “nowhere to be found” in test results, I’m guessing it’s because they haven’t been tested yet.
“Tesla dethroned” – again? Sounds like a clickbaity title that people click on. Better when BMW or Mercedes or Toyota gets dethroned for whatever reason. But then Tesla gets dethroned = instaclick.
That shows the interest.
