FINAL: Tennessee baseball stamps 9th inning rally with Dylan Dreiling walk-off single
Kavares Tears leads off the inning with a triple off the wall on a very poor play by DeAmez Ross, who is a defensive substitution for FSU in center.
Dean Curley hits a long RBI sac fly to right field for the first out as Tears scores.
Brennen Oxford relieves Conner Whittaker with nobody on, and Oxford walks pinch hitter Cannon Peebles. Cal Stark pops out for the second out.
Christian Moore comes to the plate. On a 3-2 pitch, Moore stripes a double down the left field line. Peebles holds at third base.
Blake Burke can walk it off or extend the game. He extends it with a two-run single to center. What a game. 11-11.
Billy Amick singles. Runners are on first and second for Dylan Dreiling. FSU will change pitchers, with Connor Hults coming into the game.
Dreiling lines the second pitch of the at-bat into the gap in left center. Ballgame. Vols 12, Seminoles 11.
Florida State 11, Tennessee 8, top 9th
Nate Snead works around a leadoff walk and a balk to throw a scoreless inning.
Tony Vitello was not happy with the balk call and continued to yell about it as the Vols trotted off the field at the end of the half inning. It appeared to be the correct call upon a replay.
Vols need three runs in the bottom of the ninth inning.
Florida State 11, Tennessee 8, bottom 8th
Conner Whittaker has pitched well for FSU, but the Vols get a two-out rally with back-to-back-to-back singles, including a RBI single by Dylan Dreiling.
Hunter Ensley grounds out to the pitcher to end the inning.
Florida State 11, Tennessee 7, top 8th
Nate Snead works around a single, walk and stolen base in a scoreless FSU 8th. Cal Stark leads off the UT 8th before the lineup turns over again.
Vols pitching has allowed eight walks today, including three to Florida State No. 9 hitter Jaxson West.
Florida State 11, Tennessee 7, bottom 7th
FSU pitcher Conner Whittaker looks comfortable in his second inning of work, striking out three and working around a Dean Curley infield single.
It’s getting late in Omaha.
Florida State 11, Tennessee 7, top 7th: Seminoles add two
Aaron Combs walks two, and Andrew Behnke will come in to pitch with one out. Combs worked 3.1 innings and allowed the two-run HR to start his outing but did give some length for the Vols.
After a crucial strikeout of James Tibbs, Marco Dinges stings a two-run double to left center. Tony Vitello is out again to make a change, with Nate Snead coming in to pitch.
Snead makes a good fielding play to strand a runner and end the inning.
Florida State 9, Tennessee 7, bottom 6th: Christian Moore completes cycle
Christian Moore hits for the cycle with a solo home run to center to open the UT 6th. Moore is 4-for-4 with a triple, double, single, home run and three runs scored. It is the second cycle hit in CWS history.
440 feet measured distance on the Moore home run.
Florida State 9, Tennessee 6, top 6th: FSU strands two RISP
Aaron Combs works around some trouble with a groundout to third and a testy play at first base by Blake Burke on the throw. FSU strands runners on second and third base.
Vols get out of that inning despite a couple hard-hit baseballs. UT’s lineup needs to chip away some more.
Florida State 9, Tennessee 6, bottom 5th: Kavares Tears 2-run HR
Kavares Tears lines a one-out, two-run home run to right field. The Vols are within three runs.
Florida State 9, Tennessee 4, top 5th: 1-2-3 inning
The first 1-2-3 inning of the game for the Vols as Aaron Combs strikes out two in the FSU 5th.
Vols will need more runs and some length from Combs.
Florida State 9, Tennessee 4, bottom 4th: Vols leave bases loaded
Tennessee loads the bases with two out, but Billy Amick flies out to center to end the inning.
Jamie Arnold is at 77 pitches, and with the FSU lead it would not surprise to see the Seminoles try to stretch his outing for another inning or two.
Florida State 9, Tennessee 4, top 4th: Seminoles offense is clicking
Aaron Combs is in to pitch for Tennessee, and he allows a four-pitch walk followed by a two-run home run to left by Jaime Ferrer.
Florida State 7, Tennessee 4, bottom 3rd
A quick inning, so a quick entry. FSU pitcher Jamie Arnold snags a Kavares Tears comebacker and starts an inning-ending double play in a scoreless Tennessee 3rd.
Florida State 7, Tennessee 4, top 3rd: Vols pitching, defense scuffling during 6-run inning
The first five FSU batters reach, and AJ Causey is out of the game for the Vols.
After back-to-back singles, Jaime Ferrer hits a two-run double to right-center. After another single and a HBP to load the bases, Tony Vitello is out to make the change. Here comes Kirby Connell with the bases loaded and nobody out.
Causey did not have consistent command, and FSU was starting to barrel up his sinking fastball.
Connell strikes out one but walks the next batter, tying the game at 4-4.
Connell coaxes a tailor-made double play, but Burke misplays the throw from second base and two runs score.
Cam Smith smacks a two-out triple to left, scoring FSU’s Max Williams from first base after Dylan Dreiling takes a while to get the ball and throw it into the infield.
The Vols defense has been a major issue tonight.
Tennessee 4, Florida State 1, bottom 2nd: Vols getting some luck, taking advantage of FSU miscues
The Vols are getting some lucky bounces to open the CWS. A two-out double by Christian Moore turns into a clear out by Cal Stark (coming from first base) at home — except Stark’s knee dislodges the ball from the FSU’s catcher glove. Stark scores.
Moore ends up at third base and scores on the next at-bat via a poor throw from Jamie Arnold on a soft grounder that also should have been the third out.
Tennessee 2, Florida State 1, top 2nd: AJ Causey works around trouble
AJ Causey coaxes a crucial double play to end the inning after a Christian Moore error and a single with one out.
FSU’s Jaxson West should have scored after a misplayed ball on the single, but apparently missed the third base bag and had to stop and stay at third base.
Vols defense has been shaky early, but Tennessee still leads.
Tennessee 2, Florida State 1, bottom 1st: Vols offense has traveled to Omaha
Christian Moore works a 3-1 count against FSU pitcher Jamie Arnold then hammers a line drive to the right-center gap. He ends up at third base with a leadoff triple.
Blake Burke’s pop up into shallow left field falls in front of FSU LF Jaime Ferrer. Moore scores, and the Vols are already back even after two batters.
After a walk, Dylan Dreiling drives in Burke with a RBI single to center. Arnold gets a Hunter Ensley GIDP and a Kavares Tears groundout to end the inning.
Florida State 1, Tennessee 0, top 1st: Chris Stamos faces just three batters
FSU leadoff hitter Max Williams reaches after Tennessee’s Blake Burke fields a soft grounder but leaves first base uncovered. Cam Smith walks on four pitches before a nice play by Burke on a force out to second base.
Here comes AJ Causey from the bullpen. Chris Stamos faces just three batters in his opener role.
Causey strikes out Marco Dinges before walking Jaime Ferrer. On the fourth ball to Ferrer, the ball slices away from Cal Stark and Williams scores on the wild pitch. Causey walks another before a Frank Anderson visit.
Causey gets the strikeout with the bases loaded to end the inning.
