The Broncos have hired former Stanford head coach David Shaw as a senior personnel executive, the team announced Thursday.

When Shaw stepped down from Stanford in 2022, he expressed a desire to return to the NFL, where he spent nearly a decade as an assistant coach.

Shaw, 51, and Broncos coach Sean Payton worked together as rising offensive assistants with the Eagles in 1997.

Shaw also worked as an assistant with the Raiders and Ravens.

Last year, Shaw was one of the candidates to interview for the Broncos’ head-coaching job for which Payton ultimately was hired.

This year, he interviewed for the Chargers‘ head-coaching job that went to Jim Harbaugh.

Shaw is the winningest head coach in Stanford history, with a 96-54 record. He was the offensive coordinator on Harbaugh’s staff in 2007 and was promoted to the head-coaching role in 2011 after Harbaugh left to coach the 49ers.

He is the only four-time Pac 12 Coach of the Year in the conference’s history, winning three conference championships and two Rose Bowls during his tenure as coach.
