Live updates: Heat wave shifting from Northeast U.S. to Midatlantic

After multiple days of relentless heat in much of the Midwest and Northeast, peak conditions are expected to Mid-Atlantic into the weekend. In places including Philadelphia and D.C., highs could reach 100 degrees both weekend days, with heat indexes, which take into humidity, over 105.

Numerous cities — including Indianapolis, Detroit, Cleveland, Cincinnati, Buffalo, Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, Washington and Baltimore — have already reached or were predicted to reach the highest level of the National Weather Service’s HeatRisk forecast, which rates the danger to human health. More than 200 million people in the United States are forecast Friday to experience highs of at least 90 degrees.
