A Sound Transit bus crashed into a retaining wall in downtown Seattle on Saturday evening, hospitalizing 11 people, according to the Seattle Fire Department.
One of those people, a 54-year-old man, was in critical condition at Harborview Medical Center, the Fire Department reported in a blog post. The rest, all adults, were in stable condition.
The collision occurred a little before 7 p.m. outside of an office building at 300 Fifth Ave., close to the intersection of Fifth Avenue and Terrace Street, Seattle police spokesperson Officer Eric Muñoz said. All directions of traffic were shut down during the response and Seattle City Light arrived to fix electrical lines that powered street lights.
“The driver initially stated his brakes failed and he swerved into the barrier,” Muñoz said.
The driver was evaluated by a drug recognition expert with the Police Department “out of an abundance of caution,” Muñoz said.
