In a wealthy Michigan suburb, one local advocate won’t stop door-knocking for Biden
Lori Goldman founded Fems for Dems in early 2016 to boost voter turnout in Oakland County, a wealthy Michigan suburb crucial in the state’s recent swing toward Democrats. The group’s membership has ballooned to nearly 18,000, according to Goldman.
But after hosting a watch party for the June 27 debate, she said attendees left “stunned,” herself noting that the event may have been the worst performance of Biden’s “entire political career, maybe even going back to when he used to do Christmas pageants in grade school.”
In the weeks since the debate, Goldman says many of the Democrats she’s spoken with want a replacement for Biden.
“I’ve got former clients that are texting me. They told the DNC they’re not giving another dime to Joe Biden. They’re not giving any money until they get a replacement. And then I have people on the sidelines, back and forth, group emails,” said Goldman. “They’re sending out emails saying, ‘What are we going to do? What do you think of this person?’”
Goldman, a real estate agent whose fiery personality comes across in her expletive-laced responses, believes the party is “taking our eye off the ball” and needs to move forward with Biden. She plans to continue knocking on doors in support of Biden, although her strategy has changed in recent weeks.
“I don’t even care about unregistered voters anymore. I care about registered voters that lean Democratic, that are not voting. Those are the people I care about. I was worried before about the Palestine-Israel debacle. Everything that’s going on in the Middle East that’s causing people to want to sit on the sidelines — all right, that’s now been eclipsed by all this talk about Joe Biden,” said Goldman.
