Showtime‘s Dexter returned to San Diego Comic-Con on Friday night with a very special guest in tow, Michael C. Hall.

It’s not a Dexter Con without Dexter, and this evening there were two in attendance: Hall and Patrick Gibson, the latter of who plays the younger version of the former’s character in the prequel series Dexter: Original Sin. Currently in production, Original Sin will also count on Hall’s participation as the narrator of the series, or the voice within Dexter. It will premiere in December.

It’s pretty heady,” said Hall, after receiving a standing ovation in Ballroom 20. He’s also an EP on the new series. “I’m having flashbacks of the first time I came to Comic-Con. We were in this hall. That was … 75 years ago? It’s amazing to still be alive. I cannot wait to watch this show. To a certain degree, I have a sense of what is coming. I’ve spent so much time with this character and to go back to have those sort of imaginative blanks filled in this technicolor show … It’s amazing.”

More adult Dexter time is coming, too: it was later revealed that production will start in January on Dexter: Resurrection that will feature Hall reprising his role. No additional information was given at the panel, but it should be noted that Dexter died at the end of New Blood.

The 10-episode Original Sin is set in 1991 Miami and follows Dexter (Gibson), a student refining his killer skills with the help and support of his adoptive father Harry (Christian Slater). In his dad, he finds solace and understanding, especially as his bloodthirsty urges grow and can no longer be ignored. As his only confidant, Harry teaches Dexter a code that’s designed to help him find and kill people who deserve to die — all while avoiding getting caught by law enforcement. This is a particular challenge for young Dexter as he begins a forensics internship at the Miami Metro Police Department.

Friday’s Comic-Con panel was moderated by Sarah Michelle Geller, who’s also starring in the prequel. Joining her on stage were Slater, Gibson, and EPs Scott Reynolds and Clyde Phillips. Other cast members include James Martinez, Christina Milian, Reno Wilson, Alex Shimizu and Patrick Dempsey.

Incredibly, Hall only just met Gibson Friday in San Diego, though the two had previously been on Zoom together. “We are almost the exact same height,” quipped Hall. “He still has time to grow.”

Phillips had this to promise about the prequel: “Expect what you have seen before but better. To see these characters as their younger selves is just amazing and the storytelling, I promise you, will be surprising and astonishing and satisfying.”

“It’s a wide open path,” added Reynolds about the prequel. “Being able to tell a story about a kid who thinks he’s worthless and a dad who says he’s not is a beautiful thing.”

Production on Original Sin is currently underway in Miami and Los Angeles. Most recently, Deadline confirmed the additions of Joe Pantoliano as Mad Dog, Brittany Allen as Dexter’s biological mother, Laura Moser, Isaac Gonzalez Rossi as Santos Jimenez, Aaron Jennings as Clark Sanders, Raquel Justice as Sofia, Jasper Lewis as Dexter’s adoptive mom and wife of Harry, Doris Morgan, Carlo Mendez as Hector Estrada, Isaac Gonzalez Rossi plays Gio and Roberto Sanchez plays Tony Ferrer.

Here’s your first look at the show’s opening credits below:

Dexter returned with the limited series Dexter: New Blood in 2021 with Hall leading opposite his grown-up son Harrison, played by Jack Alcott.

Dexter premiered in the fall of 2006 and ran for eight seasons ending its run as the No.1 Showtime original. When Dexter: New Blood premiered in 2021, the limited series set 10 years following the conclusion of the original, became the network’s most-watched and most-streamed original ever.
