Hi guys. I would like to discuss and share it to you all my second theory findings. Now this post will contain religious content as well, (Christian and Islam) because it connects to the mystery surrounding Gaunter O’Dimm. After all this was read and done, anyone who’s more acknowledged in this two religion, please describe us further more the details, to have a deeper insight what the creatures are that would be discussed here, more precisely their backstories, because here I only mentioned the basics that I read on the Internet and your answers could further help out the theory.

Now many people question the identity of Gaunter O’Dimm, who is he exactly? , a djinn, a demon, God? Some people even claim that he’s the Devil himself. I read and watched so many video/posts about this theory, but none were too pleasing and detailed to answer all my questions, so a year ago, during my free time I decided to dig deeper for some answers and found results. Now you might ask why I post this only just now? Well, actually just as my Vivienne curse theory, this one was also shared to xLetalis by me back then when I finished it. I don’t know why he waits so long to post a video about all this, I would really like to hear his opinion just as your thoughts, but maybe waiting was fruitful for me, because since I wrote to him I further updated the two theories and now a week ago, when I was sure to nothing add further on, I decided to stop waiting and spice things up a little, to make a post about the whole Vivienne curse case and this one as well, once and for all. Maybe all this will start the talk here in the fanbase and further on will be shared or found by xLetalis someday, and finally make a video about all the things mentioned here, because just as the previous one, this theory it will not only contain just details that were never known and unfolded before, but also images and discussions that could surprise some people, so let’s begin.

Now let’s talk about the hypothesis that surrounds Gaunter:

 First hypothesis: Gaunter is God

Gaunter can’t be god, he has his own limitations, one reddit user explained quite well in one of this theories posts, and so let me mark the words:

“He has limitations. He has to abide by contracts and for those who say that he self imposes that limit on himself, he also tells Geralt when he asks about Ciri that there are certain things he cannot meddle with and that Ciri is beyond his gaze.”

So that idea goes to the bin very fast, God is omniscient, while he is not. Period.

Second hypothesis: Gaunter is a djinn or a mage

I believe if a djinn or mage could have hold so much power that he has, the witcher world would be destroyed in an instant. Such powers in mages case are not meant for them to bear, a mage would always test his own power limitations until insanity kicks in, resulting and resorting either doing harm to himself and causing his demise or the end of the world (+ Gaunter himself even claims the he is not a mage and that he despises spells), while if a djinn had such power as time stopping abilities, then Yen and Geralt "Last Wish" quest would have been their last battle together and alive, because then the djinn could have escaped easily from Yen’s control, and instantly frying, killing both of them, so a game over for them and for the game.

So no, this idea also goes to the bin.

Third and last hypothesis: Gaunter is the Devil

CORRECT!!!

And here comes now deeper insight of the thread and the much anticipated fun explanatory part thing.

Now why I believe he’s the Devil himself? , many pointed out that he’s name first letters G.O.D. and the fact that he calls himself Master Mirror too, he tries to mock the actual God by copying him, but doing the opposite what God would do, representing evil.

So where does this all end you might ask? Well for starters, let’s start with Geralt’s new mark that he gains when he pacts with Gaunter and lasts until the DLC is finished.

Now, there are 2-3 symbols that are on his face, a big S, a laid 0/O which is mended with a big T letter. Now I want people here to use their imagination/creativity or simply put, search on the internet this key words that I’m going to write here in the quotation mark, so later on you can combine the images with Geralt’s mark.

The big S symbol: “crawling snake”

The laid 0/O symbol: “evil snake eyes”

Now the third one is actually interesting, I don’t know if it’s part of the second one or has it’s own meaning, but because I separated them, let me explain my theory here too. What does that big T mean? Now forget all the symbolic searches, the Cyrillic letters and all that.  What if the developers were a bit creative here, and let’s say they used the word SATAN, and taken out the middle letter part out (T), so after that they can use and mend with the other symbols.

Ok, but I only explained here the last one, what about the first two symbols? Don’t be afraid guys, I explain those as well.

So why out of all things that could have been imagined I chose the crawling snake and evil snake eye? Remember when we defeat Gaunter if we chose to help Olgierd, how he’s true face looks like?

Now here comes the Christian religion part of my findings, if you compare the Gaunter demonic picture you can find on the Internet with the other one that I found, ( https://mythicalcreatures.info/characters/garden-of-eden/?fbclid=IwZXh0bgNhZW0CMTEAAR02RAHtJY1V36Ts_iOivePJ_O4Nkj1n_g7m8yU0hADskdNYiEWZw-VBFiM_aem_TizbSCUge9bIjA7DaJ_P0g ) (picture is in the bottom part of the site), in the Old Testament there's a part when Adam and Eve were in the Garden and they ate the apple which the snake/Satan tempted them to eat. If you zoom in the face and compare with Gaunter demonic face, you can see an exact copy of him, only difference is that Gaunter in the Witcher had no snake tail, but he had snake eyes, which here comes the “evil snake eye” part thing, and he didn’t have horns like the picture on the link. But his face shape, skin color… perfect match!

Now what about the “evil snake eye”, well, have you ever wondered how the hell Gaunter can always keep up where Geralt is? , I mean the players surely know by now that during the whole DLC storyline he constantly follows you around. I believe that is a detection mark. Just as some of us use detection devices, the symbol could be that as well here in the game.

Now to summarize this whole mark thing can be translated as: "you made the pact with the Devil itself, which can follow your every move and crawl out of the darkest places like a snake when you need his help or he want to talk to you."

Even the children who sing that creepy theme of his describes him what he is, more precisely his ways of tricking people.

And lastly another proof is this picture, what we see here?

https://preview.redd.it/b67wbr6g0ohd1.png?width=975&format=png&auto=webp&s=4e6484db5cd20337b628d44e3e0ad14ab5ef6110

What so significant about this picture? Gaunter eats an apple where Shani and Geralt/Vlodimir stands behind him. A man, a woman, an Evil entity with an apple on his hand. Well guys it’s not the same picture case as what the Old Testament says what happened in the Garden of Eden, the only difference here is that the human in this case Shani and the witcher Geralt did not ate an apple like Adam and Eve did, and instead Gaunter did it.

Now here comes the Islamic part. Remember when Geralt asked Gaunter what he is exactly? Geralt tried to guess and mentioned that maybe he’s a djinn. Of course I already mentioned and explained that part why he can’t be that, BUT, if we look the records on the Internet, in Islam there is a certain category of djinns called shaitan, which are distinguished from the other djinns by their attributes. Here are captions about their description:

“The evil djinn are distinguished from shayāṭīn by their attributes: Whereas djinn share common characteristics with humans (i.e. they are mortal and die, follow different religions, and can, at least theoretically, be converted to Islam), the shayāṭīn are exclusively evil and are immortal until Judgement Day.”

“The Quran speaks of various ways the shayatin tempt humans into sin. They may teach sorcery, float below the heavens to steal the news of the angels, or lurk near humans without being seen. Several hadith tell of how the shayatin are responsible for various calamities that affect personal life. Both the hadith literature and Arab folklore usually speak of the shayatin in abstract terms, describing their evil influence only. According to hadith, during Ramadan they are said to be chained in Hell.”

Isn’t this familiar? , to be exact Gaunter is also like this and does this to his victims, you know tricking and meddling in peoples personal lives thing…

And who is the leader of shaitan?

“Iblis is the leader of the devils (shayāṭīn) in Islam. According to the Quran, Iblis was thrown out of heaven after refusing to prostrate himself before Adam. He is often compared to the Christian Satan, since both figures were cast out of heaven according to their respective religious narratives.”

So the conclusion is that inspiration from creating Gaunter also came from this two religions and from the Polish legend of Master Twardowski, a nobleman, who sold his soul to the devil in exchange for magical powers.

While is debatable what his name is, if we take the game’s perspective point, now we know that in our world, (not the witcher world) the name that he uses are: Lucifer and Iblis, and he is in fact the Devil himself, more precisely Satan.

And now we reached to the end of the theory, I know this one was also a lengthy one, but I hope you guys have enjoyed reading it, let me know in the comments what do you think about all this.

  1. That’s a lot of thought led completely by Catholic Christianism’s dogmas about a character in a universe where those things do not exist. When he is being called a God there is no reason to compare him to Christian God. He could be a God in the witcher universe where gods, like in most mythology, are not omniscient.

Most of your points are either overthinking or are either explained straight to your face thus it’s not a theory. Especially the apple part. Apple eating is just the most common bad guy trope.

The mark on Geralt’s face is also just G.O.D in some sort of witcher universe language, It’s the same letters used on the GOG book in the Gottfried’s Omni-opening Grimoire quest.

He is based on several mythos, like Twardowski but he is definetly not Christian Devil and definetly not Islamic Devil.

  2. I can add something about the Islamic part. Yes, your research is indeed correct, shaitan is an evil spirit but funny enough, a lot of people also use that word for the satan himself. Which obviously isn’t the right way to use it, iblis, as you said is the correct one.

Regarding the djinns tho, you can’t make a direct comparison there. Because djinns aren’t evil in Islam. While in the world of Witcher they are. Also Last Wish is a poor thought quest in general, which shouldn’t exist. I prefer to think of it as non canon.
