In a sudden turn of events, students from various colleges and universities in the Northeast have come together to urge the government to reject any proposal for asylum to Bangladeshi immigrants in the region. The students, affiliated with the Northeast Students’ Organisation (NESO), have taken a strong stance against the idea, claiming that it would compromise the region’s integrity and security.

According to reports, the students held a protest march and rally in Guwahati, the capital city of Assam, and submitted a memorandum to Union Home Minister Amit Shah, expressing their concerns and demands. The memorandum emphasized that the Northeast region has always maintained its distinct identity and culture, and the influx of Bangladeshi immigrants could lead to a loss of this identity.

"The Northeast is a sensitive region, and any attempt to change its demographic composition would be detrimental to its people. We urge the government to reject any proposal for asylum to Bangladeshi immigrants in the region," said a statement issued by NESO.

The protest march and rally were supported by various student organizations, including the Assam University Students’ Union (AUSU), the Gauhati University Students’ Union (GUSU), and the Tezpur University Students’ Union (TUSU), among others.

The NESO has also called for a nationwide debate on the issue, emphasizing the need to protect the region’s unique culture and identity.

"The Northeast is not just a geographical location; it’s a cultural and historical identity. We cannot compromise on this identity at any cost," said a student leader participating in the protest.

The Union government has been facing criticism for its perceived relaxation of rules regarding Bangladeshi immigrants, with several opposition parties and regional organizations expressing concerns over the issue.

The NESO has called upon the government to take a firmer stance on the issue and respect the sentiments of the people of the Northeast region.
