Many of us have been in the soccer watching business for a long time. For me, it's been about 25 years.
So all you guys know Those Games where the narratives, the mood, just feels disproportionately in one teams favor. I must confess that's what the Gold Medal match tomorrow between the US and Brazil is giving me.
The US is objectively the better team. The US has objectively had the better tournament performance, winning all of our games. Brazil lost 2 games in the Group Stages and advanced as a third placed team. If anything, it is a testament to the need for the competition to be expanded to 16 teams, to avoid rewarding mediocrity in the very first round.
But guys, I'm going to be real honest….. the vibes feel like a Japan 2011 type situation. You can already see the story lines.
-
Brazil lost the Gold final in both '04 and '08.
-
Who? To the USA
-
Brazil has never won a major international tournament. Neither had Japan, nor Canada in 2021.
-
Brazil's slow start in the tourney, like Japan's in 2011.
-
Brazil upsetting the host country in the quarterfinals, like Japan in 2011..
-
Marta's swansong. Possibly her last ever International match will be tomorrow. The motivation to send her off with a title. It's too perfect. Just as Sinclair with Canada in 2021.
-
Today's news of the devastating plane crash in Sao Paulo, Brazil, killing 62 people.
Brazil is not the Powerhouse it was from the late '90s to early 2010s. They are not a top 5 NT in women's football, and, on a less than stellar day, may not even be top 10. They crashed out in the last World Cup….But they've had a bit of fortune come their way. France and Spain really under performed in these Olympics. They capitalized on that. The US will be a much sterner test, but in a final, with that insane motivation, anything can happen.
We should have defeated Japan in 2011. The vibe just feels like it's fated for Brazil.

Naomi Girma… that’s all
I could easily write a 12 paragraph wall about all the vibes pushing the US’ way.
Both sides have fun narratives. I could write 3 separate ones on the back line front line and coaching. If you only look at one of them and completely ignore all the narratives on the other you can draw a compelling picture.
It’s very normal to be nervous before a big game. And it’s definitely possible to lose – it’s soccer random shit happens. But no there isn’t a clear “vibe advantage” for Brazil. They have a fun story as do we.
