For reference, I’m in my 20’s.
I recently moved in with my wife and her family, and I was hoping it’d change my outlook a bit but it’s caused quite the opposite. Where I come from is very isolated/in the woods, with little to no people around. My wife lives in a big city, with lots of daily interactions, cars, shops, people — nothing like the places I’m used to. She also lives in a mostly Spanish speaking area, a language I’m not very educated in. All in all, it’s nothing like what I’m used to, and it scares me. I’m too afraid to drive around and I’ve already been here almost a month. I spend all day inside, I avoid finding a job like the plague, and I don’t allow myself to interact with her family (who’s very sweet and accepting) due to fear of overstepping, saying the wrong thing, being offensive, or them getting upset with me and kicking me out.
I love my wife and I love my friends, and I wouldn’t necessarily call it suicidal, but I genuinely don’t get what the point of it is anymore. I struggled in school, almost dropped out, and didn’t continue higher education. I’ve job hopped multiple times due to circumstances (sick sibling, moving, etc), but I’ve never worked a meaningful job. My brother, who was my best friend, passed semi-recently, and I never allowed myself to grieve. I’m an extremely, extremely avoidant and isolated person, and I keep everything under wraps. I have severe brain fog and it feels like part of my brain is permanently fried due to depression. I’m not smart by any means — I’m not involved in politics, I don’t know about any culture/area/where to even place most countries on a map, I don’t keep up with news, I’m terrible at math and physics, and overall I feel like a shell of a person. I have no real hobbies, I don’t visit friends or family consistently, and really all I do is stay inside on my phone all day, every day. I don’t travel or do anything for fun.
I’m worried I’ll never get out and have a fulfilling life, and I don’t want to buckle down and admit defeat, but I’m unsure of how to continue from here. I don’t want to waste whatever potential I may have, and I want to be a better friend and better partner for my wife because they deserve it.
I’ve tried therapy but I mostly can’t keep up with it because I’m so closed off. I don’t know how to open up healthily, and it’s starting to strain my relationship with my wife. I can tell she’s starting to get frustrated with how much I keep from her, and she’s vocalized it several times.
