New Jersey Congressman Calls for Rail Riders to Be Reimbursed for Delays

[DATE] – TRENTON, N.J. – In the wake of another day of severe delays on the New Jersey rail system, Congressman Donald Norcross (D-NJ-1) is calling for the Governor and NJ Transit officials to reimburse rail riders for the time they’re losing due to the disruptions.

Speaking at a press conference in Trenton, Norcross said, "These delays are unacceptable and it’s high time that the people of New Jersey are compensated for the time they’re losing. NJ Transit is not just a public entity, it’s a vital part of our economy and our daily lives. Riders deserve better."

The congressman has requested a meeting with Governor Phil Murphy and NJ Transit officials to discuss his plan to reimburse rail riders. The proposal would involve setting up an "Emergency Relief Fund" to compensate commuters for the time they’re losing due to delays.

"We’re talking about people who are already stretched to the limit, working multiple jobs to make ends meet, and then they get stuck on a train for hours on end. It’s not just an inconvenience, it’s a financial burden," said Norcross.

The congressman emphasized that this is not just a local issue, but a national one as well. "We’re seeing similar delays on rail systems all over the country, from Amtrak to commuter lines in Chicago and New York. It’s a clear indication that our infrastructure is not meeting the demands of our growing population."

Some of the key points from Norcross’s plan include:

  • Setting up an Emergency Relief Fund to reimburse rail riders for the time they’re losing due to delays
  • Providing additional funding to NJ Transit to improve maintenance and upgrade infrastructure
  • Implementing new technologies to improve train tracking and scheduling
  • Increasing the number of train cars and crew members to reduce overcrowding

As of 3:00 PM today, the 23:12 train from Atlantic City to Penn Station in New York is delayed by approximately 2 hours and 14 minutes. The 15:25 train from Hoboken to Princeton is delayed by approximately 1 hour and 27 minutes.
