Ukraine Says Russian Attack Caused Fire, Russia Denies Responsibility
A fire broke out at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant in Ukraine on Friday, prompting both Ukraine and Russia to trade blame over the incident.
The fire occurred at one of the plant’s reactors, causing a significant amount of smoke to billow into the air. According to Ukrainian officials, the fire was caused by a Russian missile attack on the plant.
"We have evidence that the Russian army launched a missile attack on the Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant," said Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in a statement. "This is a deliberate attempt to harm the Ukrainian people and the environment."
However, Russian officials have denied any involvement in the fire, claiming that it was caused by a technical malfunction.
"This is a routine maintenance procedure that has been carried out at the plant many times before," said Russian Defense Ministry spokesperson Igor Konashenkov. "There is no evidence to suggest that Russia was involved in the fire."
The Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant is one of the largest in Europe and is located in the southeastern region of Ukraine. It is currently under Ukrainian control, but has been a key point of contention in the ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia.
The fire has raised concerns about the safety of the plant and the potential for a nuclear disaster. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has issued a statement expressing concern over the incident and calling for both sides to work together to resolve the situation.
