DENVER, CO – In a shocking and disturbing case, a 25-year-old Colorado man has been sentenced to 143 years in prison for threatening a Burger King employee with a gun and carrying out multiple shootings in the state.
According to court documents, Matthew Bunker of La Junta, Colorado, was found guilty of felony menacing, kidnapping, and first-degree assault in connection with the crimes, which took place in June 2022.
WHAT HAPPENED
The bizarre series of events began on June 23, 2022, when Bunker entered a Burger King restaurant in La Junta and began making threats against an employee. The employee, who was not identified, reportedly became fearful for her safety and ran out of the restaurant to seek help from authorities.
As authorities responded to the scene, Bunker fled the area, leading them on a high-speed chase through the streets of La Junta. The chase ended when Bunker’s vehicle crashed into a fence, causing significant damage.
SUBSEQUENT SHOOTINGS
After his arrest, authorities discovered that Bunker had committed multiple shootings in the area, including an incident at a local motel and another at a residence. The shootings occurred in the days leading up to the Burger King incident.
JUDGE’S DECISION
District Judge Pattie M. Prence sentenced Bunker to 143 years in prison, citing the seriousness of his crimes and the fear and intimidation he inflicted on the victims.
"The defendant’s actions were egregious and heinous," Judge Prence said. "He has shown no remorse and has put numerous people’s lives at risk. I hope that his sentence will serve as a deterrent to others who would consider similar acts."
REACTION
The victim, who wishes to remain anonymous, released a statement through the court saying, "I’m grateful that justice has been served. I’m relieved that the defendant is behind bars and won’t be able to harm anyone else."
