I suppose the purpose of this post is just to vent but why is this not a thing? It's pretty frustrating, the closest thing I've found is a 27" 1440p 480hz OLED(PG27AQDP, which isnt even out yet), but as someone who plays competitive games at a high level I don't want a 27" 1440p monitor, it doesn't fit my use case.

I think there is a misconception that people in general and manufacturers of these monitors have that comp players seem to care about visual fidelity/colours/high resolution etc but this is not the case. Generally, we're all playing on the lowest graphics using more often then not stretched 4:3 resolutions such as 1280×960 on 25inch 1080p monitors for performance/visual clarity reasons. What we care about is performance, visual clarity and smoothness i.e. high refresh rate & pixel refresh/response times.

What makes OLED so attractive to competitive players is again, not the colours or the high resolution but the 0.01 pixel response times, the 480hz, the non existent ghosting which makes tracking targets easier etc.

But sadly there seems to be no news of any 25" 1080p 360/480hz OLED monitors in the past 2 years. I think it's a pretty big gap in the market that no one seems to be utilising at the moment and I hope one of LG/Asus/Alienware/MSI/Acer pick up the slack.

  1. Oleds have excellent response times yes, but the vast, VAST majority of those interested in the tech (you’re an exception of course) are interested in the infinite contrast and perfect blacks.

The response times feature is just the icing on the cake.

I doubt very much there is much of a market in people prepared to spend a premium for fidelity on such ‘small’ screens. The laptop/portable market would be the exception.

Maybe as the tech matures (it’s still SO new in the monitor space) production costs will cheapen and you’ll see smaller but I doubt it.

  2. Meh, the thing is, competitive players don’t use the “best” option, but rather first what they are sponsored with and second what is at their LAN tournaments and many players are afraid to change what they already have, that’s why you might see players with oddly specific DPI settings, it works and they don’t want to touch it.

I’m pretty sure many of these players would genuinely play better on an OLED and like it more, considering most don’t even use strobing on TN, but their issue is that they want to practice on the same hardware they will be using in the big games.

Just imagine how bad it would feel to be playing at home at 27 inch 1440p 480hz and then suddenly you jump to 25 inch 1080p zowie monitors.
