Content Warning: Article contains information on online user behavior and digital toxicity.

An alarming trend has been observed in various online communities and platforms, as some operators (OPs) have been excessively misusing their blocking abilities, sparking debate and outrage among netizens worldwide.

Block functions, designed to alleviate harassment, trolls, and undesired conversations, are being flagrantly misused by some self-proclaimed online enforcers (OPs), claiming to "rid" spaces of "inferior content." This alarming phenomenon, termed "OP Bullying" or "Blocking Fascism," threatens to undermine user trust and democratic discussion online.

OPs misusing blocking allegedly target fellow community members engaging in controversial viewpoints, dissent, and even constructive feedback, leading to a ‘chilling effect’ on dissenting opinions and an atmosphere of paranoia. This arbitrary curation often results in disproportionate silencing of marginalized voices and individuals with perceived ‘less valid’ perspectives, further aggravating issues of toxicity and echo chambers.

To combat the mounting concerns over digital authoritarianism, online pioneers, moderation experts, and thought leaders must acknowledge the gravity of OP abuse, its harmful consequences on healthy online environments, and the need to establish standardized safeguards.

KEY TAKEAWAYS:

  • Misuse of block features by overzealous moderators (OPs) disrupts online discourse
  • Over-reliance on blocking, in the long run, damages platforms and devalues content quality
  • The ‘Blocking Fascism’ scenario raises alarms on digital bullying, censorship, and systemic inequality

Word is that some people like to be the first to post major news/rumours and then "moderate" the comment section by blocking users with undesirable opinions or questions.

I don't think there is, but is there a way to determine whether an OP has someone blocked? On any platform – desktop (old, new, shreddit), mobile… Or a way to prove it for the blocked person?

  4. >is there a way to determine whether an OP has someone blocked?

    No.

    >”moderate” the comment section by blocking users with undesirable opinions or questions.

The comments are still public to literally everyone else. Blocking people doesn’t remove comments made by the person you blocked; it only hides them from yourself.

  5. It is kind of hard to regulate, and hard to know if you even should regulate.

It is a case by case thing where the cure might be worse than the disease.

If a person is sufficiently awful, just toss them out from the community.
