Feds Seize Kilos of Lobster and Octopus in Illegal Fishing Bust Off Coast of Lázaro Cárdenas

Mexico City, Mexico – In a significant crackdown on illegal fishing, federal authorities seized a massive haul of lobster and octopus worth millions of dollars off the coast of Lázaro Cárdenas, a major fishing port in the state of Michoacán.

According to sources, the seizure was made early this morning by agents from the Mexican Navy’s Environmental Protection Agency (PROFEPA) and the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development’s (SAGARPA) Wildlife Protection Agency (PROCEM).

The bust occurred after a tip-off led authorities to a fishing vessel, which was reportedly carrying an illegal catch of over 2,000 kilos of lobster and 1,000 kilos of octopus. The value of the seized seafood is estimated to be around 10 million Mexican pesos (approximately $500,000 USD).

"It’s a major victory for our efforts to combat illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing," said PROFEPA Director, Jorge Ernesto García Márquez. "We will continue to work tirelessly to protect Mexico’s marine resources and ensure that only legal and sustainable fishing practices are used."

The seizure is believed to be one of the largest of its kind in recent years and comes amid growing concerns about the impact of illegal fishing on Mexico’s fisheries and marine ecosystems.

Lobster and octopus are highly prized species in international markets, and the illegal trade in these species is a significant problem in Mexico and around the world. IUU fishing not only harms local fishing communities but also undermines conservation efforts and poses a threat to the long-term sustainability of the world’s oceans.
