Thousands without power in Austin, marking second day in a row of outages amid heat

As of 9:00 AM CST today, over 13,000 people are without power in Austin, Texas, amid a severe heatwave that has swept through the city. This marks the second consecutive day of widespread outages in the city.

The Texas Grid Manager reports that the heat-related power outage has affected nearly 50 square miles of the city, leaving many without air conditioning or lighting as temperatures soar above 100 degrees.

Emergency responders and utility crews are on the scene working to restore power, but it is unclear when power will be fully restored. The cause of the outage is currently unknown and under investigation.

"We are doing everything in our power to restore power as soon as possible," said Austin Energy, the city’s utility company, in a statement. "We appreciate the patience and understanding of our customers as we work to resolve this issue."

Meanwhile, Austin officials urge residents to take precautions during the extreme heat. The city’s cooling centers will be open until midnight to provide a safe space for those without power to stay cool.

Residents are advised to carry water and stay hydrated while outdoor, as temperatures remain expected to stay above 100 degrees.

"We are working tirelessly to provide any necessary resources and support to our affected community members," said Mayor of Austin, Steve Adler.

This isn’t the first time the region has experienced heat-related outages this summer. On July 24th, a severe heatwave left thousands of Austin residents without power, highlighting concerns over the city’s energy infrastructure.

In a separate statement, Texas Senator Kirk Watson, whose district includes parts of the affected area, said "this is unacceptable and the Senator expects answers on what is being done to prevent future outages, especially during times of extreme weather.

The investigation into the cause of the outages is ongoing.
