Will Anything Seriously Break if You Use 5 Forgotten Monuments Instead of 5 Allied Guildgates for Battle Box?
Updated: March 15, 2023, 3:45 PM
In a shocking revelation, a prominent Magic: The Gathering community has raised concerns about the potential consequences of substituting 5 Forgotten Monuments for 5 Allied Guildgates in a Battle Box deck. The community is abuzz with the question: "Will anything seriously break if I make this swap?"
The Situation:
Battle Box is a popular limited format in Magic: The Gathering, where players construct decks using a pre-selected pool of cards. Allied Guildgates are a staple in many Battle Box decks, providing a reliable source of mana and fixing issues. Forgotten Monuments, on the other hand, offer a unique advantage by allowing players to tutor for specific cards.
The Concerns:
Rumors are circulating that using 5 Forgotten Monuments instead of 5 Allied Guildgates could have disastrous consequences. Insiders claim that the increased tutoring capabilities of the Monuments could lead to:
- Mana Shortages: With no Guildgates to provide a stable mana base, players might struggle to find the necessary colors for their spells, leading to frustrating gameplay experiences.
- Unstable Card Draws: The unpredictable nature of the Monuments’ tutoring ability could result in players drawing unwanted cards, disrupting their strategy and leaving them vulnerable to opponents.
- Game Disruptions: The potential for card advantage manipulation could create a power imbalance, leading to unfair advantages and disrupting the integrity of the game.
Expert Opinions:
We spoke to top Magic: The Gathering players and experts to gauge their thoughts on this controversy. While some believe that the risks are manageable, others warn of the potential chaos that could ensue:
- "It’s not the end of the world, but it’s definitely a recipe for disaster. You’re basically asking for a card advantage imbalance." – Pro player, Jonathan Lu.
- "I think it’s a fascinating experiment, but you have to be aware of the risks. Make sure you’re prepared to adapt and adjust on the fly." – Community leader, Ryan O’Bannon.
What’s Next:
The Magic: The Gathering community is on high alert, eagerly awaiting the results of this experimental approach. Will the Forgotten Monuments prove to be a game-changer, or will the risks outweigh the potential benefits? Stay tuned for further updates and expert analysis as this story unfolds.

I don't get to break out my cubes as often as I would like, and I am considering using them in a Battle Box + Wizard's Tower fashion, so that they get the chance to at least hit the table more often in casual play.
My question is, whether anyone thinks anything would seriously break if I used 5 Forgotten Monuments instead of 5 allied Guildgates for the Command Zone land cards that each player starts with. Then each player would start with one of each basic land, and 5 Forgotten Monuments in their Command Zone.
While the Forgotten Monument doesn't come in tapped like the allied guildgates, I think that the fact that the greater flexibility always comes at the cost of 1 life, and the fact that you don't start being able to tap for multiple colors until you have 2 Forgotten Monuments creates some interesting possibilities for play.

If you think it will be fun then I am sure it will be great.
From a design perspective the Forgotten monuments will speed up games as incremental life loss does tend to add
up. You may find I’m the later turns players will struggle to cast cards with double pips of coloured mana when they have low life totals. My suggestion would be supplementing them with another land or finding a way to make players able to cast doubled pipped cards in the later game.
I would love to know how it goes though. đ
To me it doesnât seem like a change that seriously breaks anything, so if you think it might be interesting I suggest you test it. Thing to remember is that no change is permanent so you can always change to guildgates if you or other players end up disliking it.
