A frightening encounter with an angry kangaroo has prompted wildlife carers to share tips on how to deal with these powerful marsupials.

The encounter, which took place in a park in Western Australia, involved a group of friends who were out for a walk when they came across a kangaroo that was "clearly agitated" and "acting aggressively".

One of the friends, who wished to remain anonymous, described the encounter as "terrifying" and said that the group had to "back away slowly" to avoid provoking the roo further.

Wildlife carers have since taken to social media to share their own experiences and tips on how to deal with angry kangaroos.

Safety Tips:

  1. Stay calm: If you encounter an angry kangaroo, stay calm and try not to make any sudden movements.
  2. Give them space: Back away slowly and give the kangaroo plenty of space to calm down.
  3. Avoid eye contact: Kangaroos see eye contact as a challenge, so it’s best to avoid looking them directly in the eye.
  4. Don’t run: Running can trigger a kangaroo’s natural instinct to chase, so it’s best to walk calmly and slowly away from the situation.
  5. Make yourself look bigger: If you’re feeling threatened, try to make yourself look bigger by standing up straight and spreading your arms.

Wildlife Carers’ Experiences:

"I once had to deal with an angry kangaroo that was protecting its joey," said one wildlife carer. "I stayed calm and slowly backed away, giving the roo plenty of space. Eventually, it lost interest and wandered off."

"I was out on a walk when I came across a kangaroo that was acting aggressively," said another wildlife carer. "I slowly backed away and avoided eye contact. The roo eventually calmed down and I was able to walk away safely."

ABC News Takeaway:

When encountering an angry kangaroo, it’s essential to stay calm and give the animal plenty of space. Avoiding eye contact and making yourself look bigger can also help to diffuse the situation. If you’re unsure of what to do, it’s always best to seek advice from a wildlife expert or professional.
