Typhoon Shanshan makes landfall in Japan

Tokyo, Japan – Typhoon Shanshan has made landfall in western Japan, bringing with it powerful winds and heavy rain that could cause significant disruption and damage to the region.
According to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA), Shanshan made landfall around 10:00 PM (14:00 GMT) on Friday evening, making its way westward towards the coast of Hiroshima prefecture.
As of Saturday morning, the storm’s centre was located around 15 kilometers (9 miles) northwest of Kure City, with winds gusting up to 216 km/h (134 mph), the JMA said.
Residents of the region are bracing themselves for the impact of the typhoon, which could cause significant damage to infrastructure, disrupt transportation, and trigger flash flooding and landslides.
"We’re urging everyone in the affected area to take necessary precautions, such as staying indoors, and avoiding unnecessary travel," said Hiroshima prefectural authorities.
Shanshan’s arrival in Japan comes at a time when the country is already reeling from the COVID-19 pandemic and dealing with economic uncertainties.
The authorities have warned that the typhoon could affect not only Hiroshima prefecture but also parts of neighboring prefectures, including Okayama, Shimane, and Tottori.
Residents have been advised to take the following precautions:
- Stock up on essential supplies such as food, water, and medication.
- Unplug electronics and appliances to protect against power surges.
- Secure outdoor furniture and debris that could become airborne during strong winds.
- Avoid traveling and stay indoors during the storm.
- Charge electronic devices and stay connected for updates from the authorities.
