CDC Issues Warning as ‘Sloth Fever’ Arrives in US from South America
Washington D.C. – The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has issued a warning to the public after confirming the first cases of "Sloth Fever" in the United States, a rare and potentially deadly disease transmitted by infected sloths from South America.
According to the CDC, the disease, also known as Lymphangiosis, has been reported in several states, including Florida, Texas, and California, after travelers returned from trips to countries such as Colombia, Peru, and Ecuador.
Sloth Fever is a rare and serious disease that can cause severe swelling of the lymph nodes, fever, and respiratory distress. If left untreated, it can lead to life-threatening complications, including organ failure and death.
"We are taking this situation very seriously and are working closely with international health authorities to monitor the spread of the disease," said Dr. Nancy Messonnier, Director of the CDC’s National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases. "We urge anyone who has traveled to South America and is experiencing symptoms to seek medical attention immediately."
The CDC has identified several risk factors for contracting Sloth Fever, including:
- Traveling to areas where sloths are present
- Handling or touching infected sloths
- Consuming contaminated food or water
- Having close contact with someone who has been infected
Symptoms of Sloth Fever typically appear within 7-14 days of exposure and may include:
- Swollen lymph nodes
- Fever
- Cough
- Shortness of breath
- Chest pain
To reduce the risk of contracting Sloth Fever, the CDC recommends:
- Avoiding contact with sloths and their habitats
- Wearing protective clothing and gear when traveling to areas where sloths are present
- Avoiding eating or drinking contaminated food and water
- Washing hands frequently and thoroughly
