WILD FIRES ERUPT IN CAPE PENINSULA, SOUTH AFRICA
Cape Town, South Africa – 23 March 2023
A devastating bushfire has broken out in the iconic Cape Peninsula, just outside of Cape Town, threatening numerous homes and wildlife habitats. The City of Cape Town’s Fire and Rescue Services are working tirelessly to contain the inferno, with multiple fire brigades and helicopters deployed to the affected areas.
According to eyewitnesses, the fires started in the early hours of the morning near the scenic Chapman’s Peak Drive and has since spread rapidly, fueled by strong winds and dry conditions. The popular Cape of Good Hope nature reserve and Table Mountain, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, are amongst the areas under threat.
EYEWITNESS ACCOUNT
"It was like nothing I’ve ever seen before. The flames were towering above us, and the roar was deafening," said Cape Town resident, Sarah Jenkins, who witnessed the fire from her home in the Constantia Valley. "We were rushed to safety by the fire department just in time. It’s heartbreaking to see the destruction and devastation."
FIRE SERVICES RESPONSE
"The City of Cape Town is taking the situation extremely seriously," said Mayco Member for Safety, Jeremy Valois. "We’re working closely with the Western Cape Disaster Management Centre, the South African National Parks, and other relevant authorities to contain the fire and protect both people and the environment."
RELIEF EFFORTS
Residents in the affected areas are urged to stay indoors and keep windows closed as the air quality is hazardous. Authorities are also setting up evacuation centers and providing support to those displaced. The public is advised to avoid travel to the area and to follow all safety instructions from local authorities.
POTENTIAL CAUSES OF THE FIRE
An investigation has been launched to determine the cause of the devastating fire. Officials suspect that human activities, such as discarded cigarettes or unextinguished campfires, may be responsible for the blaze.
