Mr. Vance's time as Mr. Trump's running mate has been marred by numerous gaffes and awkward moments. Vance, however, claims in his statement that these incidents were “deliberate and planned.”
"It has all been an act," Vance writes. “The J.D. Vance you saw on the campaign trail was a character that was inspired by my deep connection with cringe comedy and my humiliation fetish. I am a tremendous fan of ‘the Office’ and, especially, ‘Veep.’ I was helpless in turning President Trump’s current campaign into a string of ‘life imitates art’ moments.”
In his statement, Vance cites as examples his stop at Holt's Sweet Shop in Valdosta, Georgia and his weird comment about Mountain Dew. Vance also singles out a jab he ostensibly made at Democratic Vice-Presidential nominee, Tim Walz, that could have been interpreted to have been an insult to Mr. Trump.
“These moments have unfortunately distracted from the real, substantive policies of President Trump’s agenda,” Vance says. “I do not believe I can effectively communicate President Trump’s policies, and therefore I must withdraw from his ticket.”
Vance concludes, “Effective immediately, I am retiring from politics and will begin pursuing a career in that long waylaid and deeply held passion of mine: comedy.”
