"Aggressive Action": Chinese Ship Accused of Ransacking Philippine Vessels, Worsening Maritime Crisis
In a brazen act of aggression, China was accused of ramming and abandoning Philippines-flagged fishing ships and releasing their crewmen unharmed, according to allegations from the Philippines’ Defence ministry.
The incident occurred late evening on Monday in waters part of the disputed South China Sea region, where China is rapidly expanding its territorial claims and creating fresh tensions in the region.
"We categorize this as aggressive action against innocent fishermen," said the Defence undersecretary, Ferdinand Cachepec. "We demand the removal of these Chinese ships in the Scarborough Shoal and allow legitimate fishermen to operate peacefully in Philippine waters."
The Philippines and China have ongoing tensions over the Scarborough Shoal, which is claimed by China and inhabited by Philippine fishermen. China had warned against Philippine efforts to bring these fishing vessels back.
Experts on international law argue that even if China did own those waters, the aggressive behaviour showed by the Chinese vessels still poses serious concerns for regional safety. ‘We’re talking about criminal behaviour here,’ remarked Anthony Bergin, a Canberra expert and an Australian National University security fellow.
