Breaking News: Netflix Accused of Cultural Insensitivity as Kandhar Hijackers are Given Hindu Names in English Dub
Date: March 22, 2023
Netflix, the popular streaming service, has faced backlash after the recent release of its latest foreign language film, Kandhar, which was initially an Arabic-language movie. In a move that has left many viewers puzzled, the English dub of the film has given Hindu names to the hijackers.
According to sources close to the production, the filmmakers claimed that they made the changes to make the film more relatable and authentic to a global audience. However, the move has sparked outrage among Muslim and Indian communities, who claim that the changes were not only inaccurate but also perpetuated harmful stereotypes.
Kandhar, directed by Iranian filmmaker Mohsen Shahini, tells the story of a group of men who hijack an Indian plane in 1982 and demand the release of imprisoned political activists. The original film, titled "Downstream is Good" (Abi Hion Jiyan) in Arabic, was well-received at film festivals worldwide for its nuanced portrayal of complex issues.
However, it appears that the English dub has taken creative liberties, resulting in Hindu characters bearing the names of "Krishna", "Ram", and "Laxman". The film’s original characters, all Muslims, have been renamed, leading to accusations of cultural appropriation and insensitivity.
Fans of the film are divided on the issue, with some arguing that the changes were necessary to reach a broader audience, while others claim that it amounts to cultural disrespect and betrayal of the original material.
"Netflix should not try to sanitize or adjust foreign stories to fit Western norms. It’s important to respect the cultural context of the film and the communities it represents," tweeted filmmaker and critic, Mehnaz Majeed.
Netflix has yet to respond to the backlash, leaving many fans and critics questioning the company’s approach to global content.
