Are you confused about the difference between a county pokey and a city pokey? You’re not alone! In this breaking news update, we’ll break down the basics of each and help you understand what sets them apart.
What is a County Pokey?
A county pokey, also known as a county jail or correctional facility, is a secure facility operated by a county government to detain individuals who have been arrested or convicted of a crime. County pokeys are typically responsible for housing inmates who are awaiting trial, serving short sentences, or being held for federal or state authorities.
What is a City Pokey?
A city pokey, also known as a city jail or detention center, is a secure facility operated by a city government to detain individuals who have been arrested or convicted of a crime. City pokeys are typically responsible for housing inmates who are awaiting trial, serving short sentences, or being held for local authorities.
Key Differences:
- Jurisdiction: County pokeys have jurisdiction over a larger geographic area, typically covering an entire county, while city pokeys have jurisdiction over a smaller area, typically a city or municipality.
- Inmate Population: County pokeys tend to have a larger inmate population due to their broader jurisdiction, while city pokeys typically have a smaller population.
- Length of Stay: Inmates in county pokeys may serve longer sentences, while those in city pokeys tend to serve shorter sentences or be held for shorter periods.
- Services: County pokeys often provide more extensive services, such as mental health treatment, substance abuse programs, and educational programs, while city pokeys may have more limited services.
Conclusion:
In conclusion, while both county and city pokeys serve the same purpose – to detain individuals who have been arrested or convicted of a crime – they differ in terms of jurisdiction, inmate population, length of stay, and services provided. By understanding the differences between these two types of facilities, you can better navigate the complex world of corrections and advocate for the rights of those in custody.

explains why I keep hearing "there's no jail." OK I am glad to hear the explanation because I used to drive past that building on Locust that said "SALLY PORT" https://www.google.com/maps/@39.0971939,-94.5775162,3a,37.5y,81.07h,89.34t/data=!3m7!1e1!3m5!1sk71gzSHv2bGYDILsTczizw!2e0!6shttps:%2F%2Fstreetviewpixels-pa.googleapis.com%2Fv1%2Fthumbnail%3Fcb_client%3Dmaps_sv.tactile%26w%3D900%26h%3D600%26pitch%3D0.6609131906797643%26panoid%3Dk71gzSHv2bGYDILsTczizw%26yaw%3D81.0693477584458!7i16384!8i8192?coh=205410&entry=ttu&g_ep=EgoyMDI0MDkwMi4wIKXMDSoASAFQAw%3D%3D
and I thought that was the jail and it certainly didn't look totally decrepit. I had heard bad things about conditions inside but I'm now not sure which Pokey they were talking about. The above article said the city quit putting people in the county jail (the building on locust) because of a dispute over cost of housing them. So now I understand that building on Locust is the county jail and that indeed the city does not have a jail.
My question is….what sort of misdeed do you have to do to get put in county jail vs. what kind of misdeed do you have to do to get put in city jail?
Where, for instance, would someone (adult) be who had been accused of a murder? Where would someone (adult) be who had been accused of breaking into a CVS and making off with an ATM? What is the difference between a county crime and a city crime? Thanks?
P.S. Where do you get a baloney sandwich? I used to listen to scanners and I heard someone not wanting to go to jail because they didn't want a baloney sandwich.
