Hong Kong Protests: Police Fire Tear Gas as Thousands March Against China’s National Security Law
Hong Kong, June 12, 2020 – Tensions escalated in Hong Kong today as police fired tear gas to disperse thousands of protesters who took to the streets to demonstrate against China’s proposed national security law.
The law, which has been widely criticized by human rights groups and Western governments, would give Beijing sweeping powers to crack down on dissent in the semi-autonomous territory. Protesters fear it would erode Hong Kong’s autonomy and freedoms.
According to eyewitnesses, police used tear gas and pepper spray to disperse the crowd, which had gathered in the financial district of Central. Many protesters were seen wearing masks and gas masks to protect themselves from the tear gas.
"This is a dark day for Hong Kong," said Emily Chan, a 25-year-old protester. "We will not stand idly by while our government is taken over by Beijing. We will continue to fight for our freedom and democracy."
The protests, which began in June 2019, have become a major challenge for the Hong Kong government and China’s leadership. The Chinese government has accused the protesters of being "rioters" and "separatists," and has threatened to take "all necessary measures" to restore order.
