Biden Administration Imposes Sanctions on Russia in Bid to Discredit US Election
The Biden administration has announced a slew of sanctions against Russia in an effort to curb its alleged attempts to manipulate the upcoming US presidential election, NBC News has learned.
According to sources, the sanctions are aimed at hitting Russia’s propaganda machinery, as well as several senior officials and entities suspected of involvement in disinformation and election interference.
The penalties are part of a broader effort by the US to push back against what the administration sees as Russia’s growing efforts to shape the outcome of the 2024 election.
"We are taking these actions to ensure the integrity of our electoral process and to protect American democracy from foreign interference," a senior administration official told NBC News.
The sanctions are expected to be officially announced later today and will target several key Russian officials, including:
- Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov
- Russian Ambassador to the US Anatoly Antonov
- The head of Russia’s SVR foreign intelligence agency, Sergei Naryshkin
- The Russian Embassy’s cultural attaché, Tatiana Ryzhkova
The sanctions will also target several Russian media outlets, including:
- The state-run RT television network
- The Russian-government-funded Sputnik News agency
- The RIA Novosti news agency
In addition, several Russian entities will be blacklisted, including:
- The Russian Institute for Strategic Studies
- The Academy of Geopolitical Problems
- The Center for the Study of Public and Municipal Administration
The Biden administration has been sounding the alarm about Russia’s increasing efforts to influence the 2024 election, warning that Moscow is seeking to undermine American democracy and stability.
"We will not hesitate to take action against those who seek to interfere with our democratic processes," an administration official said.
