UK: ‘Remarkable’ Pictish Ring Discovered by Volunteer

In a thrilling archaeological find, a team of volunteers at a ancient site in Scotland has uncovered a remarkable Pictish ring, believed to be over 1,200 years old. The ring, made of intricately carved stone, is thought to be one of the most significant Pictish discoveries in recent years.

The ring was found during a dig at the Clashfarmelo Fort in Inverness-shire, Scotland, a site previously known for its rich archaeological history. The discovery was made by a team of volunteers from the Culloden Battlefield Society, led by local archaeologist Dr. Emma Currie.

"We are absolutely thrilled to have made this incredible find," said Dr. Currie. "The Pictish people were known for their incredible skill and craftsmanship, and this ring is a testament to their ingenuity and artistic prowess."

The ring, measuring approximately 5 cm in diameter, features intricate carvings of animals and abstract designs, characteristic of Pictish art. Archaeologists believe that the ring may have been used as a symbol of status or power by the Pictish elite.

Pictish rings are relatively rare, with only a handful of examples found in Scotland. This discovery is expected to shed new light on the lives and customs of the Pictish people, who inhabited Scotland from the 3rd to the 10th centuries.

"This is an extraordinary find, and one that will take our understanding of the Pictish people to the next level," said Dr. Tony Pollard, a Scottish archaeologist. "We are incredibly fortunate to have such dedicated volunteers who have made this discovery possible."

The ring is expected to be preserved and put on display at a Scottish museum, where it will be made available to the public.
