OAKLAND, CA – In a bold move, the City of Oakland has filed a lawsuit against Southwest Airlines, alleging that the airline has repeatedly violated both Oakland’s and California’s paid sick leave laws. The lawsuit claims that the airline’s actions have placed its workers and the general public at risk of infection and exposure to illnesses.
According to the lawsuit, Southwest Airlines has failed to provide its employees with sufficient paid sick leave, thereby forcing them to come to work while ill. This, in turn, has led to the spread of illnesses throughout the airline’s facilities and potentially to its passengers.
"We are taking this action to protect the health and well-being of our residents and the hardworking employees of Southwest Airlines," said Oakland City Attorney, Barbara J. Parker. "It is the responsibility of employers to comply with the law and prioritize the health and safety of their employees and the community."
The lawsuit cites the Oakland Paid Sick Leave Ordinance, which requires employers to provide employees with up to 72 hours of paid sick leave per year. The California Paid Sick Leave law also requires employers to provide employees with a minimum of 24 hours of paid sick leave per year.
Southwest Airlines has been accused of refusing to provide its employees with adequate paid sick leave, despite the laws in place. The airline has been under scrutiny for its policies regarding employee sick leave and has faced criticism from advocacy groups and employees.
"The City of Oakland is standing up for the rights of its workers and the public," said Parker. "We will not tolerate companies that prioritize profits over the health and well-being of their employees and the community."
The lawsuit seeks a court order requiring Southwest Airlines to comply with the law and provide its employees with the paid sick leave to which they are entitled.
