Rayner says unsafe cladding must be removed faster | BBC

Labour’s deputy leader, Angela Rayner, has called on the government to speed up the removal of unsafe cladding from UK buildings.

Speaking to the BBC, Rayner said: "It’s absolutely unacceptable that it’s taking so long to remove this dangerous material from our buildings. Thousands of people are still living in fear of a devastating fire because of the government’s inaction."

Her comments come as the UK government faces increasing pressure over its handling of the cladding crisis. The crisis was sparked by the 2017 Grenfell Tower fire, which killed 72 people and highlighted the dangers of combustible cladding on high-rise buildings.

Despite promises to prioritize the removal of unsafe cladding, many buildings are still waiting for the necessary work to be done.

Rayner’s call comes as Labour is set to table an amendment to the government’s Fire Safety Bill, which would require local authorities to take immediate action to remove unsafe cladding.

The government has defended its handling of the issue, saying that it is working to remove all high-risk cladding by the end of 2025.

However, Rayner said that this timeline is too slow and that action is needed now to keep people safe.

"It’s not just about meeting targets, it’s about making sure that people are safe in their homes," she said. "The government needs to take immediate action to remove this dangerous cladding and give people peace of mind."
