I’ve always been the person who would challenge myself to watch movies that showcased suffering. I’ve watched plenty of addiction and mental illness movies. Lately I’ve been wondering if this is affecting me though. I’m watching Boogie Nights now and I feel like the more and more depressing movies I watch the more it justifies a pessimistic worldview.
I think it’s fully justified considering everything that goes down but I wonder if this kind of thinking shifts how I see everything. I also have this belief that you can never be too knowledgeable. It does make you the kind of person who sees the potential bad in everything.
I was the kind of girl obsessed with true crime and on a deeper level I’d wonder why that is. I think it does take a certain type of masochist to find depressing media realistic and interesting. I’m just saying it’s even movies that could be considered tamer like Thirteen which genuinely make the world seem so dark. I always try to understand the structures behind these kinds of things like why people fall into peer pressure and why they fall into addiction.
I feel like my brain has gone through overexposure though because it’s like everywhere I go it’s like did any of y’all watch this movie because it’s literally a cautionary tale and you should stop before you go too far. You start picking up on mannerisms that relate to characters and suddenly it feels like you can see their whole future panned out in front of them.
I don’t know how someone can watch a movie like Lilya 4-ever and not have that paint their view of men. I’m told to be optimistic and have more trust in men after being exposed to that movie and so many men like that myself? It’s like how people say to take a break from the news but I never take my eyes off the news. My brain is addicted to content that shows suffering because I feel like it isn’t right for me to take a break for my mental health when for so many people it’s their reality.

Sometimes it hits me how much dark content I consume when I’m around friends who mainly consume comedy or something lighthearted. I judge them when in reality no one is putting a gun up to my head forcing me to watch people suffer. It just really is hard for me to be lighthearted at times, I feel like humor mostly hits for me if it is somehow tied to dark themes.
