Mexico News Daily
Breaking News: In a remarkable story of resilience and determination, Estonian artist Mai Onno has overcome the challenges of fleeing from both Hitler and Stalin’s regimes to continue creating and thriving in Mexico.
Born in Estonia in 1916, Onno began her artistic career in the 1930s, gaining recognition for her vivid paintings and portraits. However, with the onset of World War II, Onno found herself caught between the invading Soviet Union and the approaching Nazi Germany.
Despite the danger and uncertainty, Onno fled Estonia and eventually made her way to Sweden, where she remained until the war ended. But the traumas she experienced during that period continued to haunt her, and she eventually relocated to Mexico in the early 1950s in search of a fresh start.
Despite the language barriers and cultural differences, Onno persevered, becoming an integral part of Mexico’s art scene. She continued to paint, focusing on still-life compositions, landscapes, and portraits. Her artwork is characterized by its bright colors, fluid brushstrokes, and a deep sense of joy and life.
Today, at the age of 107, Mai Onno is still actively creating art and inspiring those around her. Her story is a testament to the power of resilience, determination, and creativity in the face of adversity.
