Switzerland is all set to go to polls on September 22nd to decide on its future climate and energy strategy. The vote, known as a popular initiative, was launched by the Swiss Environment and Energy Association (Pro Natura) in May 2019, aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions and increasing the use of renewable energy sources.

The initiative proposes to:

  • Increase the share of renewable energy sources in the country’s energy mix to 60% by 2030
  • Reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 15% by 2025 and by 50% by 2030 compared to 1990 levels
  • Increase energy efficiency in buildings and industry
  • Phase out fossil fuel-based energy production by 2050

The government and major parties have proposed a counter-initiative to address climate change, but with different measures. This includes increasing the carbon price, investing in renewable energy, and promoting sustainable infrastructure.

What’s at Stake?

The vote has significant implications for the environment, economy, and daily life in Switzerland. If the initiative passes:

  • Emissions from industry and transportation could decrease by up to 30 million tons, equivalent to removing 12 million cars from the road
  • The country could save up to CHF 2 billion (approximately USD 2.1 billion) by reducing energy consumption and pollution
  • Switzerland could take a leadership role in tackling climate change, inspiring other countries to follow suit
  • However, the country’s energy prices could rise, affecting households and businesses

Who’s in Favor?

The supporters of the initiative include environmental organizations, such as Greenpeace Switzerland and the WWF, as well as some green parties and factions within the government.

Who’s Opposed?

The opponents of the initiative, including the Swiss People’s Party and parts of the government, argue that it could lead to:

  • Higher energy prices, impacting low-income households and businesses
  • Loss of jobs in the fossil fuel industry
  • Reduced competitiveness in the global economy

What’s the Current Outlook?

While the outcome is uncertain, polls suggest that the majority of Swiss citizens support the initiative. A survey conducted by the Swiss Broadcasting Corporation (SRF) in August 2023 showed that 54% of respondents favored the initiative, while 26% were against it.

How to Participate?

Swiss citizens can exercise their right to vote in person or by post from September 15th to 22nd. All eligible voters are encouraged to participate and make their voice heard on this critical issue.
