Could McCaffrey be a buy low candidate?

Fantasy football owners, take note! Christian McCaffrey’s recent slump has got everyone talking. Is now the perfect time to snap him up as a buy low candidate?

Context:

The 2020 NFL season has seen McCaffrey struggle, scoring just 2 TDs in the last 4 games, and tallying a measly 54.5 fantasy points. His owner’s may be getting nervous, leading to a potentially low-cost pickup.

Why consider buying low?

  • McCaffrey’s rushing numbers are still respectable (3.5 yards per carry), hinting that he’s due for an uptick.
  • In his previous two seasons, he averaged over 90 rushing yards per game. With his rushing ability alone, he’s a fantasy force to be reckoned with.
  • McCaffrey’s involvement in the passing game hasn’t changed. He still sees consistent targets (average of 4.3 receptions per game) and has potential for big games.

Will he bounce back?

  • With the absence of injured WR D.J. Moore, McCaffrey may be forced to carry the receiving load. This could increase his pass-catching opportunities and fantasy relevance.
  • In the long run, his workload in both rushing and receiving can lead to significant fantasy output.

Will his current form continue?

  • A nagging ankle issue may be hampering McCaffrey’s performance, and if that’s the case, an injury or recovery could send his numbers back up.

Insider Tip:

Get McCaffrey while the going is tough. Even with his struggles, his owner’s will likely start to panic. Snatch him up now, before the fantasy community catches wind of his rebound potential!

Key stats:

  • 3.5 yards per carry (YPG) – respectable number indicating potential bounce-back.
  • 54.5 fantasy points last 4 games – undervalued based on recent performance.

Conclusion:

Buying low on McCaffrey is a bold move that could pay off in a big way. His floor is still higher than most RBs, and an injury or breakout game can quickly turn the tide.

Recommendation:

Take a calculated risk on McCaffrey. Use your waiver priority or drop a low-priority asset to grab him. It may be worth the short-term risk to reap long-term rewards.

Based on the general sentiment I've seen on social media, I would expect most people to say "No!"

But I think he potentially could be.

There are a few ways the season could play out as far as the injury:

  1. He returns in the next 2 or 3 games with a normal workload.

  2. He turns in the next 2 or 3 games, but the workload is limited or ramped up.

  3. He misses a prolonged period of time, and plays his first game in week 7 or something.

  4. He returns but ruptures the Achilles.

  5. He returns and plays most of the season but is injury-riddled.

As i type out the possible outcomes, it does feel concerning. But the good news is that it sounds like he is healthy enough to play right now, and it's week 2. There is a solid chance he could return within a few weeks and take on a pretty regular workload.

I could definitely be wrong, but personally my expectation, and what I think is most likely, is for him to be back on the field by maybe week 4, and get a few less carries than usual, maybe 10-15, but hopefully a solid number of targets and red zone work. He could definitely sit out for a prolonged time though, which I would hate, or come back and be reinjured. But I think them holding him out will reduce the chance of him coming back and getting reinjured.

But it sounds like he is close to 100% being able to play, and if that's the case I don't think they will want to keep him on the sidelines forever. Eventually they need to get chemistry as an offense and use CMC to win games if he's healthy enough to play. His workload could ramp up throughout the season as the games become more important closer to the playoffs, and he could be a valuable weapon for the fantasy playoffs if he is able to get himself healthy by then. That is why I think he could be a good buy low candidate if you could maybe get him for something like Diggs and George Kittle.

I'm curious to hear people's thoughts as to what my expectation is for CMC and if you disagree, etc.
