Swiss People’s Party Proposes Label for Media Outlets Fending Off Fake News
[Date] – Bern, Switzerland – In a groundbreaking move, the Bürgerrat (Citizens’ Council) of the Swiss People’s Party (SVP) has announced a proposal to introduce a "Gütesiegel" (quality seal) for media outlets that strive to combat the spread of fake news.
The proposal aims to promote transparency, trust, and accountability among media organizations, which are increasingly facing the challenge of combating disinformation and misinformative content. The Gütesiegel would be awarded to media outlets that demonstrate a commitment to factual reporting, rigorous fact-checking, and responsible coverage of news.
According to the proposal, the Gütesiegel would be issued after a thorough evaluation process, which would assess a media outlet’s adherence to established journalistic standards, such as:
- Veracity: Accuracy and reliability of reported information
- Transparency: Clarity in reporting and disclosure of sources
- Neutrality: Objectivity and impartiality in reporting
- Responsibility: Respect for the rights of individuals and groups
Media outlets that receive the Gütesiegel would be authorized to display the seal on their website, social media, and printed materials, signifying their commitment to fact-based reporting and truthfulness.
The proposal is part of the SVP’s efforts to address the growing concern over fake news and disinformation, which have been linked to declining trust in institutions, decreased civic engagement, and harmful impacts on individuals and communities.
Reacting to the proposal, the Swiss Media Association (SMS) praised the initiative, stating: "We welcome any effort to promote high-quality journalism and combat the spread of fake news. The Gütesiegel could be an effective tool in promoting trust and transparency in the media."

Bürgerrat empfiehlt Gütesiegel für Medien gegen Fake News
View info-news.info by rhythmstripp
