International Organizations Call for Reversal of Sentence Against Vietnamese Blogger Nguyễn Vũ Bình
Hanoi, Vietnam – In a move that has sent shockwaves across the global community, several international organizations have joined forces to demand the reversal of the prison sentence handed down to Vietnamese blogger Nguyễn Vũ Bình.
The 32-year-old blogger, who was arrested in 2020, was sentenced to 15 months in prison and three years of probation for "abusing democratic freedoms" and "spreading anti-state propaganda" through his online writings.
However, human rights groups and international organizations have condemned the sentence, citing concerns over the blogger’s freedom of expression and the Vietnamese government’s crackdown on dissent.
The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), Amnesty International, and Reporters Without Borders (RSF) are among the organizations that have called for Nguyễn Vũ Bình’s release.
"The ICRC is deeply concerned about the sentence handed down to Nguyễn Vũ Bình and believes that it is in violation of international human rights law," said a spokesperson for the organization.
"Amnesty International is also calling for Nguyễn Vũ Bình’s immediate and unconditional release," said a spokesperson for the organization. "His sentence is a clear example of the Vietnamese government’s ongoing crackdown on freedom of expression and peaceful dissent."
RSF has also condemned the sentence, saying that it is "a clear example of the Vietnamese government’s intolerance of independent voices and critical reporting."
The Vietnamese government has faced widespread criticism for its human rights record, with many international organizations and governments calling for greater respect for human rights and freedoms.
