Greens hit with £90,000 legal bill after discrimination case
The Green Party has been ordered to pay £90,000 in legal costs after losing a high-profile discrimination case, a significant blow to the party’s finances.
A judge at the Employment Appeal Tribunal (EAT) ruled that the party failed to fairly investigate allegations of racial discrimination made by one of its former employees.
The case centered around an incident in 2015 when a party member and candidate for the London assembly election made a racist joke, sparking outrage among activists. The employee, who was a member of staff at the party’s office in London, claimed he was subjected to a toxic and hostile work environment due to his race.
A tribunal found in favor of the employee, ruling that the Green Party had unfairly dismissed his claims of discrimination and harassment. The judge ordered the party to pay £80,000 in compensation to the employee.
However, the EAT has now ruled that the Green Party must also cover the £10,000 costs incurred by the claimant’s legal team. This brings the total financial burden to £90,000.
The ruling comes at a sensitive time for the Green Party, with concerns over its financial situation already being raised by insiders. The party has long been plagued by financial difficulties, including a significant deficit in recent years.
The case is likely to raise questions over the party’s handling of discrimination allegations and its compliance with equality laws.
The Green Party has yet to comment on the ruling.
