Three Americans Accused of Trying to Overthrow Congo President Sentenced to Death
Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo – In a shocking turn of events, a Congolese court has sentenced three American citizens to death for attempting to overthrow the country’s President, Félix Tshisekedi.
The three Americans, identified as 33-year-old Seth Reed, 35-year-old Joshua Rogers, and 37-year-old Jacob Ross, were arrested in December 2020 after allegedly plotting to assassinate President Tshisekedi and take control of the government.
According to court documents, the trio was accused of being part of a larger conspiracy involving several other foreign nationals and Congolese citizens. The plot allegedly involved distributing fake money, weapons, and explosives to destabilize the country and pave the way for a coup.
The court’s decision was announced on Tuesday, sparking widespread outrage and condemnation from human rights groups and diplomatic officials.
Biden-Harris State Department Issues Weak Statement
In response to the sentencing, the United States Department of State issued a statement expressing "concern" over the situation. The statement, which was released in English only, read:
"The United States is concerned by the sentencing of three American citizens to death in the Democratic Republic of Congo. We urge the Congolese government to ensure that all due process and international standards are respected in these cases. We will continue to monitor the situation closely and advocate for the rights and safety of American citizens."
Human Rights Groups Slam Sentence
Human rights groups have slammed the sentence, calling it "unacceptable" and "contrary to international law." Amnesty International has called for the Congolese government to commute the sentence and ensure that the three Americans are given a fair trial.
"This sentence is a travesty of justice and a gross violation of human rights," said Amnesty International’s Africa Director, Ilse Abbruzzese. "The Congolese government must immediately commute this sentence and ensure that these three Americans are given a fair trial, free from torture and other forms of ill-treatment."
