Moncton Joins in Demonstrations for Migrant Rights

Date: March 10, 2023

Location: Moncton, New Brunswick, Canada

CTV News has received reports that hundreds of residents from Moncton, New Brunswick, have joined thousands of others across the country in demonstrations for migrant rights. The protests, held in solidarity with asylum seekers and refugees, took place in various cities and towns across Canada, including Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver, and more.

According to eyewitnesses, the demonstrations in Moncton began at 2:00 PM local time, with participants gathering at the intersection of Main Street and Bishop Street. The crowd chanted slogans and held signs, calling for improved treatment of migrants and refugees and an end to government policies deemed discriminatory.

The events were organized by various local community groups, advocacy organizations, and faith-based initiatives, who are urging the Canadian government to adopt a more compassionate and humane approach to immigration and refugee claims.

"We are standing together today to demand that our government respects the rights of migrants and refugees," said Sarah Jenkins, a spokesperson for the Moncton Migrant Rights Coalition. "We believe that all individuals, regardless of their country of origin or status, deserve to be treated with dignity and respect. It’s time for the government to take a closer look at its policies and make some real changes."

The demonstrations come amid mounting criticism of the government’s handling of migrant claims and the treatment of asylum seekers. In recent weeks, there have been reports of migrants being detained in unsafe conditions, denied access to basic services, and faced with lengthy processing times for their claims.

  1. Why wouldn’t I want migrants to have rights? The first point of contention in the article is that they don’t want to be scapegoated for the economic crisis and the housing crisis, things that started to take shape during the covid lockdowns. You’re just being played against each other while people get rich of you

  2. Immigration is necessary for this country. We have an aging population and I’m betting the whiners want to retire one day. Good luck unless you drastically increase the population.

If you want more house get housing built. Stop whining about people living their lives. It’s not zero sum.
